Wah gwan yall, how's life been? Anyways life here in Portmore is as fantastic as ever.
Were
just out here grinding each and every day. It's really hard to find
solid people to teach. Most Jamaicans are super spiritually and know God
a lot and are dedicated to their church til they die, or are uneducated
and can't understand a thing we say. It's honestly really frustrating
and I really just want to yell at people sometimes, but that's not
exactly Christlike and the spirit has definitely constraineth my tongue
on more than one occasion. For example, our friend Andrea loves having
us over. We tried to teach her the Gospel of Jesus Christ lesson. We
spent like a solid 15 minutes trying to explain to her what faith is
like I'm back at home teaching primary again. Right after we explain it,
we ask her "So Andrea, what's faith?" She gives us a blank stare for
like 5 seconds and says, "ya just love Jesus man". At that moment, me
and my comp realized that Andrea's time to learn about, and to love the
gospel was not now with us.
Another
problem that we have is Jamaicans love agreeing with you then backing
out last second. They say they want want learn more, so we set up an
appointment with them in a couple days. Everyday we text or call them
asking if we're still okay to meet at that time that we previously
discussed. They said "yes man I will be free to talk." Even the morning
of, we text them and they say the same thing. Then later in the day when
it's actually time for their appointment we find out "me can't man I
have an appointment I'm not home right now man me cant" moral of the
story is that Jamaicans drive me crazy sometimes. If I get nothing out
of the mission in the next 23ish months, I'll at least be more patient.
Highlights of the week:
A
guy we approached this week said he hates our church because he's heard
people say we're racist. Somehow we turned that street contact around
and were trying to find a time to meet with him if we can get our
schedules to actually line up
A
funny taxi driver that whenever he sees us he yells and runs at us and
says " Yo my *racially motivated word that originated with slavery back
in the olden days around the MLK Era I think*"
Another
taxi driver that saw me and my comp walking down the street that just
starts jumping. When we get next to him he just keeps jumping and says
"white man can't jump" of course I had to jump to prove him wrong
The Mission Pres said he was coming over so we took like 2 hours to clean the house one day just for him to not come over
Lots of board game playing after proslyting hours. The people in the house love playing coup.
The
woman taxi driver that almost killed us 6 more times than a normal taxi
driver. Woman are bad at driving all over the world apparently, not
just the states.
We have
a mission tour this Saturday with Brent H Nielson I believe. It's all
in person so I'll be able to meet all 70 missionaries in the field right
now and all the off island missionaries are flying in for the weekend
as well so that will be hype. Then hrs coming to Sacrament meeting with
us the next day and I'm kinda scared.
Spiritually thought:
I've
been reading in Alma lately and something that has really stood out to
me we're the Anti-Nephi-Lehis. If y'all don't know the story behind him,
ask a family member or friend and possibly have them get your local
missionaries over. Anyways, these people made a covenant with the Lord
to never pick up their weapons of war again because of their hatred of
spilling blood and hurting others. It got to the point where when the
Lamanites came to war with them they started praying and hoped the Lord
would spare them. The Lamanites massacred over of a thousand of them
just sitting there with no resistance whatsoever. I can guarantee that
because of that hatred of sinning and letting themselves be killed,
Heavenly Father has a very special place in the Celestial Kingdom for
them. They're easily the best example of Christlike love in all the
scriptures besides Christ himself. I strive to be able to be like them
and love everyone Including their enemies. I Invite yall to love your
enemies this week. In fact, go out of your way to show someone you may
not like very much that you love them.
I'm
impressed if yall made it this far. I'm convinced that my mom is the
only one that loves me enough to read to this point. Hi mom I love
you<3. If you actually read all the way down here let me know I'm
actually curious.
