Wow. It has been a week for sure! A very long one to be exact, so I'm very grateful for this P-day.
The
area isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've heard horror stories
about how bad it is, but as of the first week, it's not too bad. First
of all, the apartment is massive! Probably at least 2x, if not 2.5x
bigger than any other apartment I've been to. Its got 4 bedrooms, 3
bathrooms and the biggest kitchen/dining room/living room area I've ever
seen in Jamaica! The area itself has got a very different dynamic than
most other areas that I've served in. The area is a lot of bush that not
too many people live in, probably because it's a long taxi down the
road in the middle of the mountains. Which is kind of nice, because
there's always a consistent breeze everywhere and it keeps ya nice and
cool. There's also not really a main downtown area, and really only 1
"neighborhood" if you will. That being said, that one neighborhood has
been worked over and over and over again, because there's not really
much else to do. I'd imagine this area being like serving in the states,
where all the people that are being taught were found at least a year
ago, stopped being taught for whatever reason, then started being taught
again for x reasons. Most of the island, people are finding new people
each and every day, and if they used to meet with missionaries it's
kinda unusual. That being said, a lot of the people here don't want to
be taught taught so far, so we're going to have to do a lot of visiting
with members so we can gain their trust and reach out to their friends
and see if they want to learn more. It'll be different for sure, but I'm
excited, especially with how strong the Auxiliary Leaders in this
branch are!!
Personally,
I'm doing alright, nothing too crazy. It's been a hard week trying to
learn a new area again, and finding all the houses of our appointments,
etc. My comp and I also have quite literally nothing in common besides
being on a mission, and so we don't do very much talking, which leads me
to thinking about a lot of stuff about home and stuff like that, that I
don't want to be thinking about while I'm out here, serving the Lord. I
know I'll make it through, but I hope all of you know how much I love
and miss you all!! Reach out sometime and tell me wah gwan!
Highlights:
•
"what the fetch! A white man in Jamaica?!" - some random Jamaican that
definitely didn't say fetch and said the the whole phrase in perfect
english. Not even a lick of patwa. He asked for a book afterwards and
that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you always carry a "law of chastity"
pamphlet with you at all times
• not dying of heat exhaustion everyday since it's so cool.
• confirming someone in church yesterday
Big up yuhselves, ya 'ear
