This week was pretty good without too many complaints. The only major one is that interviews with President took up the entire day so we couldn't really do much. Besides that, it was a pretty smooth sailing week.
The last couple of days I've been coming to realize how little time I have left. So many of my friends have already come home, and some are coming home very shortly (shoutout felipe). It's a weird feeling that I never thought I'd fully grasp. I'm having a couple of my "lasts" every single day (last kfc, last patty, last x) and I can't comprehend that in a few short weeks that my Jamaican life will be coming to an end. I won't be able to yell, "wah gwan rasta, you good?" Or mutter under my breath, "blessings, up, up ya mon, respect, bless" whenever I pass someone that doesn't wanna talk to me, or the old ladies won't be laughing when I try and chat patwa with them. It'll all just be a dream pretty soon
Highlights:
- Elder Meservy got flashed for the first time by one of our friends that was breastfeeding
- We met this older lady, named Margaret, on the road that was about to light a cigarette to smoke before we started talking to her. We got to know her hopes, dreams, and her relationship with God a little bit. We shared with her a little bit about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how living it can help us achieve all of her hopes and dreams and more. We shared how smoking and other things can limit her ability to follow in His way and stop her from achieving her dreams (She was about 70 or so years old, and explained to us that she's been smoking since she was 13). During this little interaction I called one of my recent converts, Veron Sutherland, to share his experience with her (He's a rasta that used to smoke for 12 hours a day before he got baptized. From "spliff to spliff" as he calls it) and it really touched her. She was close to tears and honestly I was getting there to. Before we left, she handed me the unlighted cigarette to throw away. We had high hopes for her. She didn't come to church yesterday so hopefully we can get in contact with Margaret and help her dreams become a reality soon. Please keep her in your prayers
- A week or so back, we were trying to have one of our Recent converts named Tamika Elliot, join a restoration lesson with one of our friends. She's about 17 or so years old and she didn't want to do it, even after trying to convince for a minute or 2. We decided that we would go over thr lesson with her again a separate time, which happened to be on Friday, to see if she didn't feel comfortable doing it because she didn't understand fully or if she was just shy. Turns out, she was just shy, but I had a super good experience. After teaching the whole thing, we expounded really deeply on how important the Restoration of the Gospel is and why we need to share it. During this time, I reflected on my own experiences over the course of my mission and how much this message has changed my life. As I shared my testimony of it, I was like 0.23 seconds away from breaking into tears.
- Our friend Courtinique that's supposed to be baptized in 2 weeks pulled up to church on time yesterday! We tried to call her in the morning but couldn't get ahold of her and we were honestly getting worried. She's still on course and I'm super grateful for all of your prayers for her!
- a Couple of recent converts that hadn't been able to make it out to church in a couple weeks/months were also able to make it out to church on Sunday.
- Sister Pauline Mills gave Elder Lassche and I early going away gifts which included a rasta colored belt, a touristy pen, and a little "one love" bracelet
Spiritual thought:
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the most beautiful thing that is known in the world today. It allows us to change our very nature and become born again so we can enter into the Kingdom of Heaven (Mosiah 27:25-26). If you aren't actively applying this gift into your life right now, I would highly encourage you to do so. If you don't quite understand how, please reach out to me. I'm more than happy to help!
Love yall,
Elder Turnbow
